Couse aim

Thanks to digitalization (semi-) professional camera’s have become smaller, cheaper and a lot easier to handle. This makes it possible to make your own video clips or reports for your own website or Facebook page. Experience as a Camjo can also be the first step towards a career in Journalism. The course familiarizes students with the basics of how to work as a camera journalist (camjo). The emphasis will be on ‘learning by doing’ applying basic theoretical principles in practical exercises and assignments using a professional DV camera and microphone. These will be followed by feedback sessions in which the students and the lecturer will identify examples of good practice as well as points for improvement. Students will be expected to work both individually and in small teams. The working language of the course will be English.

Who`s it for

(International) students with an interest in working as a camera journalist to shoot their own pictures and record their own sound in order to make stories for broadcast or online.

Learning outcomes

Upon completing the course, the participants will be familiar with:

  • the basics of how to operate a DV camera and how to use the camera, with and without a tripod, to record pictures and sound of sufficient quality to use professionally online or for broadcast
  • the basic language of shot sizes and shot composition and how to apply shot selection in practice to make a story or report for broadcast or online
  • how to shoot stand-uppers and interviews the potential pitfalls students need to be aware of in working as a camjo
