Course outline

Participants will explore a variety of formats used in contemporary factual programming and analyse their strengths and weaknesses and their suitability for informing different target audiences on issues to do with HIV/AIDS. Special attention will be given to developing and pitching creative programme ideas; to carrying out programme research so as to ensure appropriate and accurate content for the target audience; and to producing effective and attractive factual programming making use of innovative combinations of basic formats. Practical exercises and assignments will be analysed and evaluated in group feedback sessions. As well as carrying out radio or television course assignments focusing on HIV/AIDS related issues of concern to their audiences at home participants will look at how the creative use of new and social media can complement the work of the broadcast media in factual programming.

Testimonial

“The intensive International Course Facts and Formats not only gave a boost in my productivity and encouraged me to think of ideas and formats out of my comfort zone, but it also changed my approach towards the subjects in a revolutionary way. Learning the theory of persuasion made me think of my work from a different perspective and enabled me to find answers for complex WHY questions while developing new ideas. The experience of working intensively with an international group and exchanging concept and design with people from different backgrounds was an excellent and unique occurrence.”

Negin Kianfar, International Course Facts and Formats 2004, Iran, independent documentary maker.
